If you're a theater enthusiast or a fan of musical theater, you've likely heard of the iconic show Chicago. With its captivating music, compelling story, and dazzling choreography, Chicago has become a staple in the world of Broadway and beyond. But the question remains: Is Chicago currently playing on Broadway? In this article, we'll explore the show's history, its current status, and what fans can expect regarding its performances on the legendary Broadway stage.
The History of Chicago: From Stage to Stardom
Chicago is a musical that first premiered in 1975, with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and a book by Bob Fosse and Fred Ebb. It’s based on a 1926 play by Maurine Dallas Watkins, which itself was inspired by real-life crime stories. The original Broadway production was notable for its innovative choreography, inspired by jazz and vaudeville, and its satirical take on corruption, celebrity, and justice in 1920s Chicago.
Despite an initial run that lasted just over two years, Chicago gained cult status through regional productions, international performances, and a 1996 revival that turned it into a Broadway phenomenon. This revival, directed by Walter Bobbie with choreography by Ann Reinking, reimagined the show for a new generation. It became the longest-running American musical in Broadway history, surpassing Cats, and continues to be celebrated for its sharp wit and style.
Over the decades, Chicago has won numerous awards, including multiple Tony Awards, a Grammy, and an Olivier Award. Its iconic numbers like “All That Jazz,” “Cell Block Tango,” and “Razzle Dazzle” remain some of the most recognizable songs in musical theater.
Current Broadway Status of Chicago
